Bessie Nova stepped off the train just as the afternoon light turned brass-warm. She only meant to pass through, but the square caught her.Paper stars hung above the bakery door. Mr. Bell swept snow from number twenty-four, tipping his hat as he went. The corner shop glowed with cinnamon sticks and ribbon in neat rows. Every coat left a trail of dancing snow.The lamplighter laughed while children hurried past. Red scarves waved from the windows. Around the corner the butcher wore holly in his hat, the postman hummed to the tabby on the mat, and two sisters spun beneath the station wreath while neighbors shared a tin of sweets and forgot to hurry.When the fiddler started up beside the old town hall, boots began tapping time along the avenue. The whole town answered the bells—bright, easy, already swaying. From the tailor’s window to the schoolyard gate, every errand grew a little late, and no one minded.Bessie stood in the middle of it, one hand taken, the other free, and realized the bells had never been calling her somewhere else. They had been calling her here.The square filled with singing. The windows glowed. She stayed for the last note, then whispered the only goodbye that fit:“Goodnight, dear town. Keep dancing through the snow.”
